CAPTAIN: Kristance “Kestrel” Buelow

Captain Kristance Buelow serves as the founder and Commanding Officer of the USS Cutty Sark, bringing a thoughtful combination of steady leadership, strategic thinking, compassion, and a genuine dedication to her crew. Her approach to command reflects a belief that effective leadership is built upon integrity, understanding, and the willingness to recognize the strengths of those around her.

Unlike many lifelong Star Trek enthusiasts, Capt. Buelow discovered the franchise during her teenage years while watching episodes with her foster father, Paul. His kindness, integrity, and strong sense of responsibility reflected many of the ideals portrayed throughout Star Trek. Those shared experiences left a lasting impression, helping shape her appreciation for justice, curiosity, acceptance, and the importance of doing what is right, even when faced with difficult circumstances.

Today, Capt. Buelow strives to honor Paul's influence by embracing those same principles in her leadership aboard the Cutty Sark, fostering an environment built upon mutual respect, thoughtful exploration, and inclusion.

Among the many commanding officers throughout Star Trek, Capt. Buelow admires Captain Kathryn Janeway for her resilience, determination, and ability to persevere through seemingly impossible circumstances. She also appreciates Captain Jean-Luc Picard's diplomacy, wisdom, and thoughtful approach to resolving conflict. However, Capt. Buelow’s greatest admiration is fully belongs with Captain Rachel Garrett of the USS Enterprise-C, whose courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to duty represent the qualities Buelow values most in a commanding officer. Garrett's willingness to place the needs of others above her own serves as a powerful reminder that leadership often requires courage, conviction, and selflessness.

For Capt. Buelow, Star Trek is more than entertainment. Its enduring themes of exploration, diversity, cooperation, and hope reflect values that continue to influence her perspective on life and leadership.

Outside of STARFLEET, Capt. Buelow balances her responsibilities as Commanding Officer with the rewarding and sometimes challenging adventures of raising three teenagers.

Creative, curious, and imaginative, she enjoys weaving, reading, caring for her collection of houseplants, and participating in cosplay. She also appreciates a well-crafted cocktail and is equally enthusiastic about a good cup of coffee or tea.

Her wide range of interests reflects a personality that combines creativity with practicality, curiosity with thoughtfulness, and a willingness to explore new experiences.

Capt. Buelow believes that a successful crew is built upon trust, cooperation, mutual respect, and the understanding that every individual has something valuable to contribute. Drawing inspiration from the determination of Janeway, the diplomacy of Picard, and the courage of Garrett, she approaches command with a balance of compassion, confidence, and responsibility.

As Commanding Officer of the USS Cutty Sark, Capt. Buelow is dedicated to encouraging crew participation, developing meaningful friendships, and creating an inclusive chapter where members can share their enthusiasm for Star Trek while contributing to something greater than themselves. Above all, she strives to lead with the same kindness, integrity, and sense of justice that her foster father demonstrated throughout her life.

Under her command, the USS Cutty Sark continues its mission of exploration, friendship, community, and celebrating the ideals of Star Trek.
